Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the answers to some commonly asked questions about New Zealand visa applications. It is important to note that every case is unique. At the current time, processing for most visa applicants from outside of New Zealand is on hold, due to border closures as part of the New Zealand pandemic response. We expect this to change soon!

  • In general, you cannot enter New Zealand without a valid work or holiday visa. But there are many other things to consider, such as tidying up your affairs in your home country.

After you have researched whether New Zealand is right for you, and you are confident that you are ‘move-ready’, it is then time to contact a Licensed Immigration Advisor to ensure that you are on the right track to a successful visa application.

  • Many people find the visa application process overwhelming.

While there is no requirement to utilise a Licensed Immigration Advisor, their knowledge and connections streamline the process - and take the guesswork out of lengthy and complicated paperwork.

  • This depends on the type of visa you are applying for.

Requirements can include medical examinations and police checks from your home country (or other countries you have lived in). It is important that these documents are included at the right time, and that they are current. You may also be required to provide evidence of your eligibility (i.e. relationship). This can feel invasive of personal privacy.

To avoid complications and confusion around what you need to collect (and when), talk to a Licensed Immigration Advisor who has a track record you can trust.

  • The pathway to residency differs depending on the type of visa you are eligible for when you arrive. However, there are no short cuts - if you find yourself on the wrong path, you will need to apply for (and start on) a different pathway from scratch.

That’s why it is important to ensure that you are applying for the correct visa type for you, in the first instance. However, we can help get you back on track, if you need to transfer your current visa onto a better pathway for you.

  • Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to this question. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) may prioritise certain visa types depending on what is needed, especially as the country reopens after the border closures of the pandemic.

INZ offers the most up to date timeframes on their website. It is important to note that at the moment, processing for temporary visas are still on hold.

  • This depends on the type of visa that you are applying for. In some instances, your New Zealand employer will support your visa application. However, if you are travelling independently to/in New Zealand, or applying for a visa on the basis of your relationship with a current New Zealand resident or visa holder, you will need to fund the application yourself.

You will also need to consider the cost of medical certificates (possibly including X-rays), police checks, and other required documentation. Your advisor can help you plan out these costs and schedule applications to avoid frustrating delays.

It is important to remember that the application fee for a New Zealand visa is non-refundable. If your application is denied, you will not receive any refund.

  • As a general rule, to get a New Zealand visa your intentions must be both genuine and demonstrable. For example, if your goal is to work in New Zealand, you may need support from a New Zealand employer. If you are in a relationship with a current New Zealand resident or visa holder, you will need to provide evidence that your relationship is genuine.

Eligibility criteria vary for different visa types. A Licensed Immigration Advisor can give you confidence in your application and eligibility.

  • At Clockwork Visa, we specialise in the immigration process, but we cannot find you a job in New Zealand. Many qualifications can be recognised within New Zealand, so research within your field to discover what is possible for you. A strong grasp of spoken and written English is important for most positions.

It is important to note that temporary or permanent visas to work in New Zealand generally require certain conditions to be met. Once you are move-ready, contact a Licensed Immigration Advisor who can take care of the visa paperwork and guide you smoothly through the process.

  • Many people find the find the visa application process complicated and confusing. From understanding official language to ensuring that supporting documents are organised in the correct order, there are so many things to consider when applying for a visa.

Working with a Licensed Immigration Advisor means you can feel at ease with expert support every step of the way, thus ensuring a strong application. A great Immigration Advisor will identify issues that may arise, and will work to overcome these or any other obstacles on your visa journey.
